Witness the Miracle of Sea Turtle Nesting at the Sea Turtle Conservancy Guide

The Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC) in Tortuguero, Costa Rica, is a leading organization dedicated to the research, conservation, and protection of sea turtles. Located in the heart of one of the most important nesting sites for green sea turtles in the Western Hemisphere, the STC offers visitors a unique opportunity to learn about these magnificent creatures and witness their nesting rituals firsthand (during nesting season). It's a must-visit destination for anyone passionate about marine conservation and wildlife. The Sea Turtle Conservancy has a long and rich history, dating back to 1959 when Dr. Archie Carr began his pioneering research on green sea turtles in Tortuguero. His work laid the foundation for the organization's ongoing efforts to understand and protect sea turtle populations. The STC has played a crucial role in advocating for sea turtle conservation policies and implementing effective conservation strategies, including beach monitoring, nest protection, and community education programs. Visitors to the Sea Turtle Conservancy can participate in guided night tours to observe nesting sea turtles (during nesting season, typically July-October for green sea turtles). The STC also offers educational programs, exhibits, and volunteer opportunities. You can learn about the different species of sea turtles, the threats they face, and the conservation efforts being undertaken to protect them. While in Tortuguero, be sure to try some of the local Caribbean-influenced cuisine, such as rice and beans with coconut milk and fresh seafood.
